Good book! In comparison w/the writer's first book (Houndini and Other Tales), Domestic Drafts is less unified. But the high points might be higher. Two stories in the first section - the one about coaching the soccer team, and the one about mishaps during a houseboat vacation - might be the best two things Schmidt ever wrote. Yet these stories (true stories, I realize) are good in different ways. The soccer story is inspiring, even moving, with a brilliant ending reminiscent of "The Lady, or The Tiger?". The houseboat vacation is simply hilarious, written in Schmidt's trademark self-deprecating, humorously resigned tone of voice. If you don't laugh aloud when reading the houseboat story, then, my friend, you must be a different species from the rest of us.Of course Domestic Drafts is not Shakespeare or Dickens (or George Orwell or Russell Baker, if we compare to other essayists). But it doesn't try to be and it doesn't need to be. It's a highly entertaining, sometimes moving, look at the little victories, the little tribulations, the many unpredictables (is that a word?) of domestic life.
